What is a Dedicated Server?

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

A question I am often asked by clients new to hosting that are evaluating their needs is: what is a dedicated server as opposed to a virtual or shared hosting account? Simply put a dedicated server is a single server at a web host that is leased by the client and is dedicated to that client only. It is not shared with other clients at all. The web host normally monitors hardware, and network equipment and connectivity. Dedicated servers are great choice for those who need greater storage space, bandwidth and flexibility than virtual hosting plans can provide.I find it important to then outline the main advantages of going with a dedicated server over a virtual plan. On a dedicated server all of the server resources are available to you and you alone. With virtual hosting plans the server resources are shared by all the hosting clients on that particular server. Dedicated server hosting plans also give you more control as well; providing clients with greater flexibility regarding software installs and admin options.

Once the basic differences are understood we then work together to find a hosting plan that best fits the clients current hosting needs with on eye on future growth and options for upgrading when needed. View our current Dedicated Server plans or Complex Hosting plans for more information.

3 Tips for Increasing Website Security!

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Keeping your computer and website secure is paramount in today’s world. Here are 3 tips that should be included on your security checklist to help improve your protection.

1. Keep Your System Updated

You need to be sure you have the most secure operating system environment on your computer by running Windows Update (if you own a Windows-based PC) or Software Update (if you own a Mac) and installing all of the updates marked “High Priority”. Note: you may have to run the update more than once to ensure you have all the high priority updates; many of the patches require a system restart, and then additional patch installations to complete the process.

2. Check for Insecure Scripts and Coding

It’s extremely important to keep your website software up to date. Outdated software is likely to have bugs which can give a hacker access to your website. If your software is no longer maintained, it is strongly advise that you select new software that is regularly updated. If your software vendor operates a mailing list, it’s a good idea to be subscribed and stay informed. Security issues are typically announced along with a new version of the software to address the problem.

3. Prevent Viruses and Executables

Viruses, ‘Trojan’ applications, and key-logging software can all steal your login information, in addition to anything else on your computer once it has been compromised. These sorts of threats are typically brought into the system and installed by “executable” programs. An “executable” program is something you download and then you run it as its own program - as opposed to opening a file or a folder. You can tell if a program is an executable if its file name ends in EXE. You can also right-click the file and choose “Properties.” If the “File Type” says “Application,” then that file is an executable. Hackers and account thieves like to put their viruses, keyloggers, etc into executable files. Scan for viruses regularly using up to date antivirus software.

Time to evaluate your web hosting needs?

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

In today’s fast paced world and emerging technologies your business can literally take off overnight. One aspect of a growing business that is often overlooked is the company’s web hosting needs. Many times a business will be operating on a shared or scaled down hosting platform simply because they have not reevaluated what is needed today and for future growth as their business has become more successful.

Some questions you should consider:

First and foremost, are you receiving timely and reliable service?

If on shared hosting is it time to upgrade to a managed dedicated server?

Is a fully redundant load balanced server cluster something you should consider today, next month or next year?

Do you have a RAID setup for redundancy AND a backup solution? If your website and data are your lifeline you better have both.

Does your hosting hosting company offer 24×7 support 365 days per year via phone, email, and chat? Is support outsourced or not?

The good news is you are not alone! Your hosting provider should be willing and able to assist you in evaluating your needs and determine what solution is best for you. If they can not then it’s clearly time to search for a new web host.

Welcome to the Webair Blog

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

To start this off, as this is the first Webair blog, I wanted to offer a small background of who we are, where we came from and how we started.

As I sit here and write this entry it’s hard for me to believe even now that we have come such a long way in such a short time. Over 10 years of hosting excellence!

Webair was born in 1996 of the notion that it was EXTREMELY hard for me, as a designer to find a reliable, stable hosting company to host my 20 or so accounts that I had built up over the course of a few months. Coming from a design background I had my work cut out for me if I was to create the type of company I had yet to embark upon with little technical experience. When I first began I wanted to realize what it was that we needed to do not only to compete but to offer a level of excellence like no other host had, all while maintaining a personal approach. We have seen many competitors come and go and technologies rapidly change over the years. We have been blessed with an amazing group of people at Webair. Some have gone off in their own direction over the years, and some have remained since inception. I personally thank all of them for their dedication, love, generosity, and hard work that they have contributed; helping to make us who and what we are today. This special group of dedicated people (our core team) have provided our clients with everything I had imagined and so much more. Our success over the years is directly attributable to our dedicated team, commitment to our clients and our client’s commitment to us. Nothing speaks louder then word of mouth in our industry. Our reputation speaks volumes. When you become a client at Webair.com you become part of a growing family; networking together to bring you an incomparable level of services and support.

These are exciting times at Webair. Already this year we have provided our clients with an upgraded control panel, an enhanced and redesigned website, we have become an ICANN Accredited Domain Registrar, and introduced new site building and management tools. This is all part of our never-ending quest to continually improve our services.

Our mission is simple…Offer our clients the peace of mind they need to effectively run their business. The foundation of the culture at Webair is our commitment to your complete satisfaction. Our personalized service and talented technical support specialists allow us to employ even the most complex hosting solutions while continuing to provide the real-time responsiveness that Webair is known for.

-Thank you
